Building Relationships – David Christmas

Who?

David Christmas has done many things over his lifetime. He has been in multiple leadership roles in businesses such as Royal Mail and DHL. Currently he is on the global logistics board and is the head of logistics in Asia Pacific at DB Schenker.

Quick Summary

What inspired you to want to go into your current field? Was it always on your mind or did you ‘fall’ into the industry?

When David left university, it was hard finding a job due to the poor economic situation in the world. He did some work with the university he was attending as well as going for any position he could find. His journey started with a job in sales, something David wasn’t too passionate about, however he still went for it. He gained a lot of experience from the people around him which later helped him to apply for graduate jobs.

David enjoys things like planes, ships and trains, the physical piece of transportation and movement. He also loves working with people, so a job in the supply chain was perfect for him.

Do you think that the jobs you did helped in building the rest of your future?

David suggested that it was more about connections. Connections doesn’t mean that you must come from a particular group of people, it’s about who you meet. That is very valuable in building your journey and creating a name for yourself. Never be afraid of meeting new people or approaching someone of a higher position. Everyone is always happy to help out with growing the next person. If you know someone, you are one step closer to getting the job you want.

If you were to imagine being a student in university, around your 20’s, and you had the knowledge of what your life would like, what plan of action would you have?

David mentioned that everyone has opinions and lessons to provide. However, you should always listen to your head and your gut as only you know yourself the best. You must always listen to your heart. You should feel excited and happy when you start a new job or an activity. David wished he knew earlier that working hard doesn’t always equal growth. It is important to have a work life balance to keep your motivation going.

If you could leave the youth with one piece of advice, what would it be?

Life is full of moments and you have to live those moments.

“Listen to people’s advice and listen actively”
